Dear FCC,

I would like to register a formal complaint about a radio station that frequently airs indecent programming that certainly falls into the legal definition of obscenity. The station is WNEW 102.7, based in New York City, and airing in the urban and suburban areas, the particular show is called "Opie & Anthony," and the owner of the station is Infinity Broadcasting. The shows content is not suitable for minors, and yet it runs Monday through Friday from 3pm to 7pm. The station also has a website www.wnew.com, at which you can see further evidence of the indecent content of the radio show.

I have heard unbelievably degrading comments about women's bodies (with mention of certain sexual and excretory organs), racist jokes, jokes about pedophilia, and jokes about violence against women. In June 2001, they put five women in 55 gallon drums in their underwear, and threw food, insects, and other substances in the bin with them, and pictures of this were on their website. They also promote an activity on Wednesdays called "WOW" (meaning Whip em' Out Wednesday) where women are invited to flash their breasts at men, and they pass out WOW bumper stickers all over the region for this purpose.

This is clearly perverted "humor" that patently offensive, and directly encourages negative behavior and attitudes. They are violating the law, and if nothing else should definitely not be aired during daytime hours when children can be listening. I would like to request swift action to investigate this program, and that you take the necessary actions to either remove the program from the air or require the station to air the program between the hours of 10pm and 6am. Please keep in contact with me about your progress.

Dear FCC,

I am writing to express my extreme concern about the airing of a very offensive radio program called "Opie & Anthony" on 102.7 fm (WNEW) that broadcasts in the New York tri-state area. This show is very sexist and negative towards women, and follows along the same lines as the notorious Howard Stern show.

Recently the New York papers reported that the Opie & Anthony show commissioned a "Voyeur bus," with naked women in a shower viewable through the glass sides of the bus, to drive around the Manhatten streets just to shock people. During this show, I heard that they were joking with and encouraging a teenage boy who called to report that he had seen bare breasts for the first time. The women who participate in their antics need psychological to give them real self-respect, but instead all they get is mockery from these two shock jocks.

They treat women as objects that just exist to serve men's needs. This sort of attitude is dangerous and simply unacceptable. It is the kind of attitude that desensitizes people, and lays the groundwork for women being attacked in central park, sexual harassment in the workplace, and the numerous rapes that occur every year in this region. It is also degrading to men who listen to it, by assuming that they aren't capable of appreciating humor that doesn't involve misogyny.

This show does not add anything positive to society, and is inappropriate for children to be listening to. This show should be moved to much later hours of the day, instead of the 3pm to 7pm slot it now enjoys. Please give swift action to this matter. Please get back to me and let me know what you plan to do.

Dear FCC,

I would like to register a complaint about a radio station that frequently airs indecent programming. The station is WNEW 102.7, based in New York City, and the particular show is called "Opie & Anthony." The station owner is Infinity Broadcasting. The show's content is not suitable for minors, and yet it runs Monday through Friday from 3pm to 7pm. The station also has a website www.wnew.com, at which you can see further evidence of the indecent content of the radio show.

This show encourages ignorance and intolerance. Every time I turn it on, something more offensive than the last time is being aired. For example, they occasionally play a game called "What's in My Pants" whereby they try to guess the shape of a woman caller's pubic hair as she rubs the phone along it. They once played this with a seventeen year old girl, and joked about how they should call their lawyer to find out if it was even legal. The two shock jocks make fun of women, obese people, people of other nationalities, etc. non-stop. It often encourages the use of pornography or plays down the negative effects of sexual perversions. Society needs more positive role models of healthy sexuality, not more immoral ones like this.

I realize that such shows are enjoying this country's "freedom of speech." However, this right should be used responsibly not be abused. If we are going to allow this show to continue, then equal time should be given to people who educate about the harms of pornography, and its detrimental effects on society and the family.

Please turn your attention to this matter as soon as possible, and keep me informed of what your agency intends to do to alleviate this situation.
